Men’s Health: The Silent Struggle and What to Do About It

When we talk about health, we often see women leading in this area - whether it’s to do with regular check ups, food choices, or wellness routines. But here’s the hard truth - men are increasingly struggling with preventable health conditions, and many aren’t getting the support they need.

As a nutritionist, I see this pattern all too often - fatigue brushed off as "normal," stress carried silently, and symptoms like low mood or weight gain chalked up to age. The reality is, men’s health is in quiet crisis mode and it’s time we started talking about it.

Health isn’t just about lab results—it’s about energy, confidence, and living fully. The good moments come easier when your body’s on your side.

The Hidden Crisis that No One's Talking About

Heart disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, liver issues, obesity, poor sleep, and mental health concerns - these are not just risks on paper. They're showing up younger and more frequently in men. What’s even more concerning is that men are less likely to seek medical help, let alone speak openly about stress, anxiety or emotional health.

Then there’s the hormonal side. Low testosterone and disrupted metabolic health can lead to everything from belly fat and low libido to burnout and poor sleep. But because many men have been conditioned to “tough it out,” they’re suffering in silence.

Modern Lifestyles Aren't Helping

Let’s face it—most of us are spending more time sitting than moving. Add in processed foods, high stress, poor sleep, and constant screen time, and you’ve got the perfect storm for metabolic burnout.

Here’s where nutrition steps in. Rather than treating symptoms, we ask why the body is struggling. And when we do that, patterns emerge:

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Nutrient deficiencies (especially zinc, magnesium, B12, and omega-3s)

  • Blood sugar instability

  • Gut dysbiosis

  • Hormonal imbalance

What can You Do? Start with these 5

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. But small shifts can make a huge difference:

  1. Move more, sit less. Even a 20-minute walk after meals can regulate blood sugar, boost mood, and support heart health.

  2. Rebuild your plate. Focus on whole foods—protein (like eggs, oily fish, grass-fed meat), fibre (vegetables, legumes), and healthy fats. Cut down on refined carbs and sugar.

  3. Rethink stress. Chronic stress impacts hormones and heart health. Breathwork, cold exposure, resistance training, and nature walks are tools that actually work.

  4. Don’t guess - test. Hormones, blood markers, nutrient levels, gut health—all can be tested to tailor a plan that actually works for you.

  5. Fill the nutritional gaps. Consider targeted support: zinc, magnesium, B-complex, omega-3s, and vitamin D are often low in men and make a massive difference in energy, sleep, and mood.
